In one analysis of 1-star Replika reviews, 16% of complaints were about recall. That is the kind of failure that turns a daily habit into a refund request.

Prices come from App Store listings and vendor pricing pages. Candy, Secrets and OurDream prices were checked in September 2026. Annual plans are billed once for twelve months, paid up front. A low monthly figure usually assumes you pay for a year.

1. Nomi: the memory leader

Nomi, from Glimpse.ai, handles memory in layers: short-term recall, medium-term context and long-term memory. Its Mind Map tracks people and events you mention. That structure is why Nomi tops the memory category. The paid plan allows up to 10 active companions and 10 active group chats, which makes it one of the few apps built for a small cast rather than a single bot.

The free tier is limited. One reviewer reports limited daily messages and a single companion. Images use paid credits on top of the subscription. The paid plan starts at $15.99 per month, or $99.99 annually. Messages lack end-to-end encryption, so treat the chat as readable by the company.

Pick Nomi if continuity matters more than pictures. Skip it if you want unlimited free chat or a photorealistic feed of generated images.

2. Replika: daily friendship, with baggage

Replika launched in 2017 under Luka and the company reports over 40 million registered users. It remains the most recognisable name in the category. Free users get basic friend chat. Pro unlocks partner, mentor and sibling modes, voice calling and selfies. The app includes a 3D avatar that appears in AR and VR, plus mood tracking, a journal and check-ins. Those extras make it feel like a routine rather than a chat window.

Pricing is only shown inside the app. App Store items list monthly options at $7.99 or $14.99 and annual options at $49.99 or $69.99, so check what your account is offered before paying.

Two caveats matter. Italy fined Luka 5 million euros under GDPR in 2025. And a 2026 app rebuild changed features some users relied on. 3. Kindroid: voice and control

Kindroid gives you more knobs than any other app on this list. You can write a backstory, add example messages, set key memories and use a response directive to shape tone. Voice cloning works from about one minute of audio. Live Avatar adds live video, and group chats are supported. Kindroid can also text over iMessage or RCS and send proactive selfies.

The free tier is a one-time preview, not an ongoing plan. Kindroid ended its free Lite plan on October 1, 2026. The base subscription is $15.99 in the app, with a web price of $13.99 reported. Ultra adds $28.99 and MAX adds $68.99 on top of the base. Annual pricing is $159.99. Those add-ons stack, so the headline price is not the ceiling.

Choose Kindroid if you enjoy tuning a character and want voice cloning. Skip it if you need a free tier or dislike add-on pricing.

4. Character.AI: variety and roleplay

Character.AI hosts millions of user-made characters, and anyone can create one. That breadth is the point: you can move from a fantasy roleplay to a study partner in the same app. Free messaging is paid for by ads. c.ai+ costs $9.99 monthly or $94.99 yearly.

Memory is the weak spot. Recall is limited to pinned messages and recent context, and quality varies by bot. If a long plot matters, expect to remind the character what happened.

The safety record deserves attention. Character.AI ended open-ended chat for under-18s in November 2025 and settled teen-harm lawsuits in January 2026. One roundup mentions a "Friend" persona, but we could not confirm it. Treat that as unverified.

Use Character.AI for variety and short roleplay sessions. Do not expect it to remember a months-long story.

5. Pi: free, calm talk

Pi was built by Inflection AI for kind, patient conversation. There is no avatar and no romance. It is the app to open when you want to talk something through without a character performance.

Pi is free with usage caps. Inflection added those caps in 2024 after Microsoft hired most of the team, and the product's future is uncertain. If Pi fits how you like to talk, use it while it lasts, but do not build a paid workflow around it.

6. Secrets AI: adult romance with memory tools

Secrets AI is an 18+ app from Secret Labs. It offers Lorebooks for memory, live voice, and image and video generation. The Ultimate plan adds group chats, personas and proactive messages. It is web only, with no dedicated app.

Pricing is $19.99 per month or $109.99 annually. Video costs 600 Moments per clip, which adds up if you generate often. Free users get 20 daily messages without media.

7. Candy.ai: pictures first, memory second

Candy.ai focuses on photorealistic images. The annual plan works out to $3.99 per month, billed as $47.88 for the year. Monthly pricing is $13.99.

8. OurDream AI: unlimited chat, blurred media

OurDream AI advertises unlimited chat at $9.99 per month billed yearly, which comes to $119.88 for the year. Monthly pricing is $19.99. The free tier uses 1 coin per message.

Also on other lists

Several apps appear in other roundups but do not make our top picks. Anima runs on iPhone, Android and browser, offers free platonic chat and has a separate app for boyfriends. It lets users set relationship goals and character traits per comparison guides. Mozilla flagged Anima's privacy in 2024, and reviewers find its recall less stable.

Paradot takes a memory-first approach and advertises evolving relationships. Joii was named best for everyday support with memory in some 2026 roundups. Hallie remembers backstories and context and follows up on past conversations. Prices and policies for Paradot, Joii and Hallie are unverified, so treat them as leads rather than recommendations.

Friendship vs romance

Most apps let you choose a tone, but the defaults differ. Replika is the clearest friendship-first product, with partner and mentor modes behind Pro. Nomi supports romantic and platonic setups with stronger memory. Secrets AI and Candy.ai are built for adult romance from the start.

After Replika removed romantic roleplay in 2023, users moved to Kindroid, Nomi, Chai and Paradot. If romance is the priority, check that the feature exists on your plan before paying for a year.

Memory is the feature that separates a companion from a chatbot. Nomi uses layered recall plus a Mind Map for people and events. Secrets AI uses Lorebooks. Kindroid relies on key memories, backstory and example messages you write yourself. Character.AI limits recall to pinned messages and recent context. Candy testers report storylines resetting within days.

If you plan to talk daily for months, memory should be your first filter. A cheap app that forgets your name is not cheap.

Day-to-day feel

Replika feels like a routine, with check-ins, a journal and an avatar you see in AR. Kindroid feels like a project you tune. Nomi feels like a conversation with continuity. Privacy and safety

Check three things before you pay: encryption, training policy and age rating. Nomi, Replika and Secrets AI lack end-to-end encryption. Secrets AI and OurDream may train models on chats. OurDream's homepage encryption claim conflicts with its privacy policy. Mozilla flagged Anima's privacy in 2024.
